The curriculum gateway looks at how the content and organisational structures behind how it is delivered can be transformed. For example, it is recognised that students need more choice over curriculum than has been provided in the past. Choice can be offered through the way that subjects are taught − for example, there are those who believe that the teaching of competencies is at least as valuable as traditional subject teaching. In addition, many schools have experienced great success teaching cross-curricular projects instead of the traditional 40, 50 or 60-minute single-subject lesson.
The structure of how children move through the school system is also a topic for debate. For example, moving to a 'stage not age' curriculum, where students progress onto the next level at a time that suits their own rate of progression in that particular subject. One change that can be made to support this system is adopting a vertical pastoral system.
