5th iNet International Conference, 26 28 November 2008

iNet has worked in partnership with our sister organisation, Khanya, and schools in South Africa for three years. This report presents some of the principles and practices involved in African Partnerships, between schools, between organisations and with business. It outlines the work undertaken by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and its schools to encourage involvement of teachers and students in African classrooms. The partnerships documented in the report are long term, and are fundamental to the way in which the schools see themselves.

The report also explains the way in which businesses can join this international network. Schools and businesses seeking links in Africa usually refer to the following benefits.

• Learning about global issues: the consequences of global poverty and inequality, global interdependence, diversity and democracy, and developing a sense of global citizenship
• Building relationships, communities and friendships: learning enough to reject negative stereotyping of refugees and immigrants, building real, personal contacts and using these to support the curriculum
• Harnessing the wish to help: either through one-way direct support to schools in the partnership, or through the exchange of experiences, expertise and learning
