The Annual iNet (South Africa) Conference, at the Western Cape Sport School in February, addressed a vital and practical topic: A Principal’s Guide to Global Communication.
Chas Ahrends reports that the conference attracted 78 delegates, including school principals, two delegates from the Stellenbosch University Education Department, and three UK visitors who contributed to the agenda.
After the introduction by Alan Mills, SSAT/iNet’s Africa Manager, Margaret Wilson, head of King John School, Essex, UK, delivered the keynote address. Margaret’s school has had links with South African schools for over four years. She gave delegates valuable advice and guidance from her experience on how education leaders can make the most of global communication, for the benefit of their learners.
Malcolm Seegers from Khanya, gave an excellent lesson on Skype and presented websites and blogs on behalf of Kobus. Mark Swartz, Christo Davids and David Mathe conducted email sessions. A grade 11 learner from Bernadino Heights SS demonstrated that learners can successfully be trained to navigate and use Mindset independently of their educators. The original developer of Mxit explained the educational value of mobile online communications.
Michael Wilkins and his deputy from Outwood Grange School in Wakefield in the UK gave a lively presentation on their use of technology and school organisation. The current iNet Provincial Steering Committee chair then outlined the strategic goals for 2008.
The delegates’ evaluations of the conference were very positive, Michael Wilkins’ presentation being particularly appreciated. Principals interviewed at the end of the conference highlighted how important it is that each school takes responsibility for helping to make international partnerships successful.
